  • About the Fest:

This summer, come on out for the Central Rockies' only old-time music festival! The third annual Rocky Mountain Old-Time Music Festival will be held at The Parrish Ranch near Berthoud, CO on June 1-3, 2012. The festival will showcase traditional forms of fiddle and banjo-focused music with performances, workshops, and dance.

We're proud to annouce this year's headliner: traditional Missouri fiddler Vesta Johnson, performing with her grandson Steve Hall. Vesta is a former Missouri State Fiddle Champion and plays many tunes in the Ozark style. Originally from rural Missouri but now living near St. Louis, Vesta has been playing fiddle for over 80 of her 90 years and is a treasure trove of both common and rarely heard Missouri tunes. We are so very excited and honored to have her headline this year's festival!

We'll have a frisky Friday night kickoff dance to start the weekend right. Saturday will feature workshops, kids' activities, performances, jamming, a square dance, and socializing, eating and drinking. (Contests were cancelled; sorry!) We'll finish things off on Sunday morning with breakfast (catered by the Ranch; cost TBA) and more jamming.

Our new location, The Parrish Ranch, is a working cattle ranch located along the Little Thompson River in Berthoud, Colorado. On-site camping, RV hookups, tons of jamming space and the necessary festival amenities will be available. It's the perfect place for an old-time music festival, with a lovely old barn for square dancing (one of Colorado's best early square dance venues, in fact!)

So, please join us June 1-3 for our third annual festival - see below for camping info, schedules, and everything else you need to make your plans. Check back often for updates! We hope to see you in June.

Please note that future festivals will be held annually during the second weekend of July.

***INTERESTED IN PERFORMING AT OUR 2013 FESTIVAL? Please send us an electronic or hard copy of your press kit or a sample of your music by February 1st, 2013.***

    Camping info:

The Parrish Ranch has a large, grassy area available for tent camping, and 40 sites with hookups (water and 30-amp electric; no sewer or dump station) for RVs and campers. Tent camping is included with the weekend ticket package, or can be purchased per night. Spots are not assigned and are first come, first serve. Parking is very close to the tent camping area - gear can either be dropped off or brought in by foot.

RV sites must be purchased separately (per night), and are also not assigned - pick your favorite spot when you arrive! Please click here for more on camping at the Ranch. Sorry, no dogs allowed.

    Food and Drink info:

Friday evening we'll have a potluck, so please bring a dish to share and a table setting (so that we don't have to use paper products.) We've booked two food trucks for the day on Saturday. The Verde Food Truck will be at the fest site from 8am - 2pm, and the Heirloom Food Truck will be at the festival from 2pm - 9pm. We'll also have Berthoud's own Mountain's Edge Coffee available all day!

On Sunday, a Ranch breakfast will be served for those interested. Tickets are $9 and can be purchased in advance here or at the gate. Typical breakfast foods such as pancakes, eggs, and bacon will be served. A vegetarian option will also be available.

The Parrish Ranch allows visitors to bring their own alcoholic beverages in.

    Tickets:

Purchase your tickets here. Kids 16 and under are free for the whole weekend, and discounted tickets for seniors (65 years old and above; bring ID) will be available at the gate (no pre-sales) for the following prices: $7.50 Friday admission; $10.00 Saturday admission; $35.00 weekend admission + camping. **Evening-only (starting at 6pm) tickets will be available at the gate on Saturday for $10.**

Things to know about the Ranch:

For some history about the Ranch and its square dancing past, read this great story by local caller Chris Kermiet!

There is no wi-fi, and cell reception is spotty at best. There are no showers. Bring and label your own chairs for hanging out in, jamming, and watching performances. Bring your own table setting for the potluck, and don't forget to bring a dish to the potluck also! There is plenty of shade available, so don't worry about bringing tarps and shade tents (unless it's raining). Bring some bug repellent/citronella just in case. There is biking nearby, but no biking is allowed at the Ranch. No fishing, pets, or fireworks allowed either. There is plenty of water available for drinking, washing dishes, etc. Wading and tubing are allowed in the river (but at your own risk). Email us if you have any other questions!

***Workshop descriptions (check back for more):

Fiddle and Guitar, Missouri Style: Come take part in a wonderful workshop where traditional musicianship is brought out of the player. We will work on guitar backup accustomed to playing solo with a fiddle player. This type of guitar style gives you the chance to catch the tune and chord progression, emphasizing bass lines for the guitar. Laid back and fun will be the name of the game. We will work on timing of runs and techniques accustomed to Missouri Style Backup for dance, Jam, or even contest Fiddling. We will work on Vesta's tunes, and put the two together and have lots of fun.
